A Long Overdue Welcome Home For Vietnam Veteran USMC Sergeant Sulsona

A LONG OVERDUE WELCOME HOME.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, one very deserving Vietnam veteran celebrated his own personal Independence Day when he received the keys to his own customized Smart Home from the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Building for America’s Bravest program.

The road home has been long and winding for USMC Sergeant Michael Sulsona, who lost both legs while patrolling with his infantry unit in central Vietnam in early 1971. Michael, who was honored with both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his heroic actions, credits his positive attitude towards his amazing accomplishments since then. An award-winning play writer, Michael has produced 23 plays, 35 productions, and 15 screenplays, to date, after earning his MFA in Writing from Goddard College.

Some things, however, are even better unscripted, as evidenced in the very well-attended homecoming ceremony in Staten Island, NY, where Michael and his wife enjoyed a long-awaited happy ending to their ongoing story. George Venarchik and Steve Mandaro from Brother’s Carpet & Flooring Carpet One Floor & Home in Hackensack, NJ, along with officials from the Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation were all on hand to welcome the couple home. Brother’s Carpet generously assisted in this expansive Smart Home project, donating and installing flooring that will enable Michael to move about with ease.

Michael is now a proud Ambassador for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, where he mentors other veterans who have sustained injuries. He credits his optimism to the advice he received from other injured service members during his recovery at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital so many decades ago.

The Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation’s Building for America’s Bravest program designs and builds customized, mortgage-free Smart Homes for veterans with catastrophic injuries. Addressing each hero’s unique needs, these Smart Homes are fully equipped with features such as automated doors and lighting, accessible showers, and much, much more.
